Mad Libs: The Trials of Michelle M. Part I

It’s time for a new Hotel Tuesday feature! Do you guys all know how to play Mad Libs? Basically, you get a list of parts of speech (noun, adverb, superlative) and you fill it out. Then you plug those words into a pre-written story and see whether your answers are funny in the context of the story!

Well I wrote a thrilling tale about Michelle M. and had some of my Hotel Tuesday readers provide the missing words/phrases in the story. Of course, they had no idea what they were doing to poor Michelle M…. So here are the results!

The Trials of Michelle M. Part I: by Enrico and Adam

One morning, Michelle M. woke up, yawned, danced, and yelled “Jesus, Mary and Joseph!” at her husband Harry. Harry smiled at his beautiful wife, then rolled back over and continued dreaming about James Franco.

Michelle walked into the kitchen and began making breakfast. She was making her favorite breakfast meal: extra firm tofu with a tall glass of Diet Wild Cherry Dr. Pepper. As she began to eat her breakfast, she sat at her computer and went to Sean Cody, her favorite website in the world, which she visited at least 69 times a day.

Suddenly, the floor began to rumble. “Not another earthquake!” she said aloud, hiding underneath the ottoman for protection. But her efforts proved futile—the floor beneath her ripped open and Michelle fell through, screaming “Good Lord!” the whole way down.

Luckily, she landed in a lake filled with blood–when she was just a teenager, Michelle won a First Place Spelling Bee Trophy for her stellar swimming abilities, so she was able to swim to the shore with ease. When she reached the shore, she found herself in a dark cave. Bats circled above her head. “Ow!” she said aloud. “My armpit hurts!”

As she looked around, she noticed a bright light in the corner of the cave. As she approached she was surprised to find Kathy Griffin pooping in the corner of the cave with a horrified look on her face. “What’s going on? Why am I here? Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?” Michelle shouted at Kathy.

“For visiting Sean Cody 69 times a day, you are being punished by Harry McKee, the ruler of the universe!” Kathy said, peeing maniacally. “In order to get home to your hairy husband and your smelly bird, you must complete three trials that will test your stamina, wisdom, and sex drive. And the first trial begins… NOW!” Suddenly, the cave smelled like pickles.

7 Things: Public Transportation

It’s time for another edition of 7 things! Inspired by Ms. Miley Cyrus’ hit single “7 Things,” I follow her trend of saying seven things I like about something, and seven things I hate about something! This time, I’m talking about commuting/public transportation.

I’m actually pretty fortunate when it comes to my commute. It’s about an hour door to door during rush hour (but it only takes about 15 minutes to get into Manhattan during off-peak hours). Every morning, I take a bus from West New York into Manhattan (about 45 minutes), then take a subway from Port Authority to my job on 26th Street (about 15 minutes). So here are seven things I like and hate about commuting.

The 7 Things I Hate About Public Transportation

1. People Listening To Music
Without a doubt, this is my least favorite part of commuting. I don’t get easily annoyed/mad, but people blasting music on their headphones on public transportation somehow makes me furious. Oh well, they’re the ones who are gonna go deaf from listening to music on their headphones SO LOUD that the whole subway car can hear it!! And of course every time this happens, they never play something really good, but Chris Brown or LMFAO instead! GRR.

2. The Cost
Y’all know I’m cheap. My monthly bus pass costs $98. My monthly MetroCard costs $104. I usually cry a little on the first of the month, when I buy both on the same day.

3. Dim/Dead Light Bulbs On The Bus
How can I get any reading done when I commute home at night and the light bulbs barely cast any light on my book?! This happens all the time.

4. People Singing/Performing On The Subway
Now I love every singing performance show, so this one may come as a surprise. The reason I find it annoying? Because I’m usually trying to read when I’m on the subway and then the people walk around belting some funky, played out song and I can’t concentrate on my book.

5. The Rain
It’s amazing how many times I’ve had to walk home in the rain since moving to West New York. I used to keep an umbrella in my car, so I never got caught out in the rain. Now it seems to happen once a week.

6. People Who Don’t Curb Their Dogs
The 5-minute walk to my bus stop is extremely dangerous–the sidewalks are littered with dog crap! The “Please Curb Your Dog” signs every few feet are completely ignored by WNY residents so I have to hop along the sidewalk and avoid the surprises left by neighborhood dogs. It’s like a game! But not fun.

7. People Who Sit In The Aisle Seat And Frown
Anyone who takes the bus often knows exactly what I’m talking about. These people sit in the aisle seat, put their coats in the empty window seat next to them, and glare at you as you pass so you don’t ask them to move over. Stop hogging the seats! Rude!

The 7 Things I Like About Public Transportation

1. Reading Time
Unless I’m carsick or too tired, I usually get a lot of reading done on my commute. I was studying for the GRE until November and never got to read for fun. But then I gained so much free time commuting that I read five books in December alone! I’m flying through my library now with all this time.

2. My Commuting Buddy
My roommate Delisa also works in Manhattan, and occasionally has to go in at 8:45. When the stars align this way, we get to commute together in the morning and I’m way more motivated to actually get out of bed and get ready!

3. Driving Along Blvd. East
My bus route goes down one street almost the whole commute, and that street is John F. Kennedy Boulevard East. The reason I like driving down Blvd. East is because the NYC skyline is visible the whole way, so I get to look at the skyline as I’m preparing to go into the city. At night, it’s a really beautiful view.

4. Availability
You’d think I spend a lot of time waiting at bus stops or something now that I commute every day, but I don’t! When I get to the bus stop every morning, a bus is there in less than two minutes. And the subways run every few minutes too during rush hour. I fortunately haven’t experienced any broken down buses, or Lincoln Tunnel traffic, or subway malfunctions!

5. Crazy People
As a writer, I’m always looking for situations that I can borrow and put into my stories or poems. And I’ve seen plenty of crazy people on the subways of NY! Some of them have already made cameos in my stories.

6. “Gimme Pizza” (feat. Josh)
Now that I have an unlimited MetroCard, I can just hop onto a subway and meet Josh in Brooklyn when he gets out of work. Then we eat delicious pizza (cheap!) together and gossip and talk about music all night! Hurray for BFFs and the subway system!

7. Not Driving
I hate driving! I NEVER DRIVE ANYMORE!! I’ve been carless for about three months now. Hurray!

I don’t think many of my readers take public transportation that often, but if you do, tell me what you hate or like about it!!

Rediscovering Music

You know how you hear a song when you’re young, and it’s kind of interesting and you hear it so much that you learn the words? Then one day, years and years later, you hear that song and realize that it’s actually really good?

That happens to me all the time. I’m not talking about rediscovering a song like when you love a song, forget about it for a while, then stumble upon it and get obsessed all over again. I mean when you hear a song, have no feelings about it, and then stumble upon it later and get obsessed for the first time.

These three songs are all songs that I rediscovered in the past year—when I heard them for the first time years and years ago, I didn’t think much of them. Now, they are some of my favorite songs.

“Thank U” by Alanis Morissette

How ‘bout me not blaming you for everything?
How ‘bout me enjoying a moment for once? . . .
How ‘bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out?

The main reason I remember this song from my childhood is probably the same reason most people remember it—the scandalous music video (which you can watch above). In the video for “Thank U,” we find the former Mrs. Ryan Reynolds hanging around NYC completely naked. Homegirl sits on a subway naked (eww), stands in the street naked (dangerous!), and even goes grocery shopping naked (unsanitary). When I first saw this video back in 1998, I thought it was funny and scandalous, but I didn’t think much of the song.

Well all that changed when I randomly decided to listen to some of Alanis’ albums on Spotify (while it’s still free). I’m still not won over by the singles on Jagged Little Pill, but now I love “Thank U” (which is on Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie). I think the repetition of “How ‘bout” at the start of every line in the verses is a brilliant conceit for a song. It seems like it could get played out, but each thought is so different that it works perfectly in the song. I can’t believe that 10-year-old Enrico watched this video so many times without hearing the great song it was accompanying.

“Power of Good-Bye” by Madonna

You were my lesson I had to learn
I was your fortress you had to burn

You can consider me a latecomer to all things Madonna. Growing up, I obviously heard most of her singles and saw most of her music videos and all her best VMA performances (i.e. the one with Britney Spears), but only because she’s the queen of pop and you can’t pay attention to pop culture without hearing all about her! I remember responding positively to her singles from Ray of Light when I was young (“Frozen” is also a rediscovered song for me), but it didn’t make me go out and buy her cassette or anything like I did for Aaliyah and Mya.

Like Alanis, I recently took advantage of Spotify and listened to Madonna’s discography. While many songs stood out (how good is “Borderline”?? And “Sorry” too!), nothing was quite as strong as “Power of Good-Bye,” which I guess you could call my favorite Madonna song. (Although that might actually be “Papa Don’t Preach” or “Like A Prayer,” Madge songs I’ve always loved). I remember seeing the video and being like, “Madonna has dark hair!” and “Everything’s blue!” But again, I didn’t pay much attention to the song. Returning to it with different musical tastes (and more life experience), I now love this songs. Madonna songs aren’t always lyrical masterpieces (see: “I Love New York”), but I love the simple and relatable lyrics of “Power of Good-Bye.” And the music on this track showcases my favorite Madonna era, as I vastly prefer the moody and textured sounds on Ray of Light to the over-produced dance tracks on her latest album.

“Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinead O’Connor

All the flowers that you planted, mama
In the backyard
All died when you went away

Of course I remember seeing the iconic music video for this song when I was young! When the song and video came out, I was actually only a year old, but I guess the song was big enough that I still saw Sinead’s bald head crooning out this Prince song on my television screen years after the song’s release. What can I say about this song? I guess I just needed to grow up and get a broken heart before I could really relate to it and appreciate it fully. It’s totally the “Someone Like You” for the generation before me!

So do you have any rediscovered songs? I keep telling people about this post and they have no idea what I’m talking about…. PLEASE TELL ME YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!

Empire State

We’re only a few days into 2012. You know what that means… time to come up with some New Year’s resolutions! I did a pretty good job with last year’s resolutions… In fact, I did all of them!

So let’s start out with my main resolution of the year…

Since moving to the city, I’ve basically been traveling to work, The Strand (bookstore), SoHo, and to Brooklyn occasionally. I rarely venture above 45th Street and haven’t even been to all the boroughs yet! So my New Year’s Resolution is to explore NY more. After all, some people only get the chance to the see the city on vacations (or never see it at all!), so I should take advantage of this opportunity I have!

Here are some other things I want to do in 2012:
- Read at least 20 books.
- Learn at least 10 more songs on guitar.
- Write more fiction.
- Resume jogging once it’s nice out.
- Find somewhere in New York City to go dancing (that doesn’t discriminate against women).
- Finish watching all of the Academy Award Best Picture winners (I’m like 1/5 done… lol).
- If I don’t get into grad school, apply again!
- If I don’t get into grad school, apply for a job in trade.
- If I DO get into grad school, have a party to celebrate!

So what are your New Year’s resolutions?!

2011 Favorites

2011 is almost over! Which means it’s time for my favorite blog entry (even if no one else cares).

It’s time to review my favorites things of 2011! As I compiled this list, I realized that most of these things come from previous years. Was 2011 a bad year for entertainment or something? Oh well. Here we go!

Please note: my favorites are based on when I experienced them, not the year of their release. I may have a favorite CD in 2011 that came out in the 1970s, but the year I discovered it is the year that matters to me!

A Room Of One’s Own

Merry Christmas eve y’all!

So yesterday I posted some pics of my new apartment, but all the rooms were empty in the pictures! Here are some photos I took today to show how I’ve decorated my room.

First, here’s the living room/kitchen. It’s actually just one big room (my roommate Delisa calls it the great room) split in half. So when you first walk in, it looks like this:

And when you look to the right, it’s the living room! (feat. huge map on wall, our beautiful Christmas tree, and a rug that doesn’t match the couch or anything else in the room!)

And when you look to the left, you see the kitchen! (feat. cabinets that are too high to reach, the island-type-thing where we eat, and Polt’s Christmas and birthday cards on the fridge!)

OK, so here’s my room! When you look to the right:

And when you look straight in:

And when you look to the left:

As you can see, I have a lot of books! And even with my one bookshelf on the right side (with 3 shelves), plus the tall one in the corner (with 7 shelves), plus books along the whole windowsill, I still have plenty of books stacked next to the bookshelf and sitting in boxes under my bed.

So here are some of my favorite parts of my room!

Last night, Delisa and I exchanged Christmas gifts. She got me this amazing record player! I have a bunch of records since I used Ross and Christie’s record player when I lived in Lambertville. I desperately needed my own record player so Delisa got me this one for Christmas. Isn’t it beautiful?! I used it this morning when I listened to Joni Mitchell’s Blue from start to finish!

And here’s my reading corner. I got this lamp from Home Depot (for only $20!!!!!) so now I often sit in my big pink chair and read while Goddess Adele looks down on me. I spent several hours here today actually, as I just finished reading The Red Tent.

And here’s the best birthday gift ever. Mindful that I will need to get used to the paparazzi stalking me and taking pictures of me whenever I step out into public, Michelle M. sent me this set of photogs/journalists/crazy fans that I set up right in front of my desk. Now whenever I’m on my computer, I look up and see all my fans/stalkerazzi looking at me and remember that I deserve to be famous and rich! Hurray!

One of my best friends Colleen gave me this as a housewarming gift. She was a graphic design major and I saw this piece at her exhibit and expressed my love for it. She made me a copy so I could hang it in my room! It features lyrics from many of my favorite songs, like Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Storms”!

SO DO YOU LOVE MY ROOM?!?!

Moving

Everything is moving!

As you can see, my blog moved! I was over Blogger and hope WordPress is just as easy to use as everyone says it is. (Thanks to Milo for showing me how to move all my content over!) I hope everyone likes my new winter theme, representing SAD.

AND I MOVED!

I haven’t updated since I moved from my house in the woods of Hopewell to West New York. When I got a publishing job in NYC, I moved to West New York, NJ (I know, confusing address) to make my commute easier.

For those of you who haven’t seen it on Facebook, here’s my apartment!

Front Door!

My Room!

Bathroom!

Kitchen!

I’m sure I’ll post some pics eventually of the rooms with furniture… Gotta clean up first!

I really love living and working in/around the city. There’s always so much to do and so many options of places to eat and shop! (Even for someone as cheap as I am; whenever I forget to pack my lunch, I just grab a $1 slice from 2 Bros.!)

And as a bonus, here’s the song “Moving” by Kate Bush, to celebrate all this moving.
